Chapter Four

Dylan gripped her tighter. As she squirmed, moonlight hit the cop full in the face. Phosphorescent light dripped off her forehead, the tip of her nose, her lush lips, like mercury, tripping her DNA switch as it went.

Tripping his.

The cop’s features were frozen in a silent cry. Her fingers dug into his skin, slashing long gashes into his shoulders, bringing up ribbons of welts and the sharp odor of blood—sharp, tangy and in a truly grotesque way, rivaling the aroma of a good draft beer.

It was a sorry-ass way to make a point, Dylan knew too late. And by the way, when was the last time he’d turned down a naked woman’s advances?

“Argh.” Truth be told, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d had sex, or what feeling normal felt like. It had been a long time since he’d been able to relax around anybody. He had to be so careful, on guard. Now, his body stretched and heaped up mountains of pain, twisting his shape into a foreign one he feared he might someday freeze into.

And the luscious cop in his arms?

She was way beyond the body-jarring earthquakes now, and twitching like she had ingested a particularly lethal form of poison that was taking her down. Which was pretty close to the truth, as Dylan saw it. Physical, mental and societal poison is what this change was—for which he could only assume she hadn’t been at all prepared.

Dylan held her as firmly as any wolf held its prey, hungering for the writhing cop they both held close. Her slickness was gone at last. She had stopped moving; not exactly limp, more as though she waited for something else to happen. But of course, it already had.

Scenting one of its own, Dylan’s beast gave a roar to fill the silence.
